The biggest thing would be to practice fast tempos. Most ppl just paly swing at moderate tempos and forget about really fast and really slow ones.

John Riley makes an amazingly obvious but true point in 'Beyond Bop Drumming.' "To play fast, you have to practice playing fast." In other words, there's no big secret. Relax your hand and let the stick do its thing.

You said it. Ditto.
There are no shortcuts. Just lots of practice, study, listening, & analyzing to iron out the fabric.
& anything Weckl, Vinnie, Dennis, Erskine, Kennedy, Gottlieb, Novak, GBiss, Tony, Elvin, AFoster, Gadd, Rosenblatt, Brechtlein, BStewart, JHamilton, Blade, Riley etc etc had or have to say on the matter is highly useful info....
